There is a large industry built on EMF fear, and most of it sells you a product. Stickers for the back of your phone. Pendants that "harmonize" radiation. Cases that promise to block 99% of it. We test devices for a living, so people ask us constantly: does any of this work? The honest answer sorts into three very different tiers — and one of them can quietly make your exposure worse.
The three tiers of "EMF protection"
Lumping every product into one bucket is how people get fooled. Here's the framework we use:

Tier 1 — Real shielding: it works, but read the fine print
Let's be fair: shielding RF is genuinely possible. It's the Faraday-cage principle — a conductive enclosure blocks radio waves. Silver- and copper-threaded fabrics, specialized window films, and shielding paints really do attenuate RF, and they're used in serious settings from MRI rooms to electronics labs. If a product is honestly made from conductive material and honestly measured, it can reduce the RF passing through it.
The catch is the trade-offs, and they're big:
- Shielding is directional and leaky. A canopy or film blocks what's behind it, but RF bends around edges and reflects. Half-measures often just move the field around rather than remove it.
- Block the signal and the device fights back. This is the crucial one — see Tier 2.
- Reflections can raise levels. Line a room with conductive material and you can create a partial echo chamber, bouncing a source's own signal back at you.
Real shielding is a tool for specific, measured problems — not a sticker you slap on and forget. And the only way to know it did anything is to measure before and after. If a shielding product can't survive a meter reading, it isn't shielding.
Tier 2 — The backfire: how "anti-radiation" cases can raise your exposure
This is the counterintuitive one, and it's the most important thing in this article. Your phone is not a fixed emitter. It constantly adjusts its transmit power to hold a connection — weak signal, it shouts; strong signal, it whispers (we covered this in Phone EMF: Does Distance Actually Matter?).
Now put a partial metal shield around it. A case or pouch that covers the back — or worse, wraps around the antenna — degrades the phone's connection to the tower. The phone responds exactly as designed: it increases its transmit power to punch through. The shield blocks radiation in one direction while the phone pumps out more in every direction to compensate. Independent analyses and consumer-safety groups have flagged exactly this effect — that certain shielding cases can measurably increase a phone's radiation output rather than reduce it.
The tell: any product that fully or partially encloses a transmitting device and claims to block "99% of radiation" while the device still works normally is describing a physical contradiction. If it truly blocked the signal, your calls would drop. If your calls don't drop, it isn't blocking the signal — but it may be making your phone work harder.
Tier 3 — Pure theater: stickers, pendants, and "quantum" anything
Then there's the category with no plausible mechanism at all: adhesive stickers for the back of a phone, holographic chips, and pendants marketed with words like scalar, quantum, bio-energy, or negative ions.
A passive sticker a few millimeters wide cannot block, absorb, or "neutralize" a radio field passing through and around an entire phone — there is no physics by which it could, and independent testing has repeatedly found these products do nothing measurable. Regulators have noticed: the FTC has taken action against sellers of radiation-"protection" devices making unproven claims, and some "anti-5G" pendants sold abroad turned out to be mildly radioactive themselves. The marketing leans on scientific-sounding words precisely because there's no science underneath.
How to spot a scam in ten seconds
You don't need a physics degree — you need a few red flags:
- "Blocks 99% of radiation" — but your phone still works perfectly. Physical contradiction (Tier 2).
- "Scalar," "quantum," "bio-energy," "frequency harmonizing," "negative ions." Sciencey words with no measurable definition (Tier 3).
- A tiny passive object protecting a whole room or body. No mechanism.
- Testimonials and "feelings" instead of meter readings. If it worked, they'd show you the numbers.
- Urgency and fear in the sales copy. Honest measurement doesn't need a countdown timer.
What actually lowers your exposure (and it's free)
Here's the part the protection industry would rather you didn't hear: the things that genuinely reduce EMF exposure cost nothing and are backed by simple physics.
- Distance. RF drops with the square of distance. A foot of air beats any sticker ever made — it's the most effective "EMF product" in existence, and it's free.
- Duty cycle. Airplane mode, eco/VOX modes, and turning off radios you aren't using cut transmission at the source.
- Placement. Router out of the bedroom, phone off the pillow, laptop on a desk not your lap.
- Wired options. Ethernet, speakerphone, wired headphones — each removes a transmitter from against your body.
None of that is for sale, which is exactly why you rarely see it advertised.
The one honest use of a meter: verify, don't trust
If you own or are tempted by a shielding product, there's a genuinely useful thing to do with it: measure it. Take a reading of the source, add the product, and read again. A real shield moves the number down. Theater doesn't move it at all — and a backfiring case may move it up. That before-and-after reading tells you more than any product page.
