Of every variable we test — brand, model, network, settings — one dwarfs all the others: how far the phone is from your body. The short answer to the title is yes, more than anything else you can control. Here's what the physics says, what our measurements show, and which habits actually move the number.
The physics: exposure collapses with distance
RF power density follows the inverse square law — it falls with the square of your distance from the source. The arithmetic is dramatic at phone scale:
- A phone at your ear sits roughly an inch from your head.
- Hold it at 12 inches — reading the screen, speakerphone on the desk — and the power density at your head drops by roughly two orders of magnitude.
- Across the room on a charger, it's a rounding error.
No case, sticker, or "harmonizer" product produces anything remotely comparable. Twelve inches of air is the most effective EMF product ever made, and it's free.
Peak versus average
Whatever phone you hold, the same pattern holds — the gap between peak and average is the signature of how phones behave. They transmit in bursts, hard during uploads and call setup, then back off. The same phone at ear distance would measure far higher; in a bag across the room, far lower. The device matters less than the distance and the moment, which is exactly what the phones in our database show when you compare them at the distances we test.
What else changes the number
- Signal strength — the hidden variable. A phone showing one bar transmits at up to its maximum power to reach the tower; with a strong signal it whispers. Long calls in elevators, basements, and fringe coverage areas are the highest-transmit scenarios. Counterintuitively, your exposure from your own phone is lowest where coverage is best.
- What the phone is doing. Video calls, uploads, and hotspot duty keep the transmitter busy; an idle phone checks in only occasionally. Airplane mode silences it entirely — the reading drops to background.
- Wi-Fi vs. cellular. On a strong Wi-Fi network, phones typically transmit at lower power than on a weak cellular connection — another case where better connectivity means less transmission.
What regulators measure: SAR
Phones sold in the US must stay under the FCC's Specific Absorption Rate limit of 1.6 watts per kilogram (averaged over one gram of tissue), tested in worst-case transmit conditions against the body. SAR is a compliance ceiling, not a ranking — a phone with a lower SAR figure isn't automatically the lower-exposure phone in real use, because behavior, signal, and distance dominate. That's why we measure power density in realistic conditions instead of re-publishing SAR tables.
On the health question, the position of the FDA and WHO is that there's no consistent, credible scientific evidence of health problems caused by RF exposure from phones within these limits — while research on long-term heavy use continues. We think the sensible reading of that is neither alarm nor dismissal: the exposure is real and easy to reduce, so the low-cost habits below are worth having either way.
Habits that actually matter, ranked
- Use speakerphone or earbuds for calls. Moving the phone from your ear to your hand or desk is the single biggest reduction available — this is also the FCC's own first suggestion.
- Text instead of calling when it's practical. Short bursts, at arm's length.
- Don't sleep with the phone at your pillow. The nightstand is fine; across the room is better; airplane mode is quietest of all.
- Mind the pocket during weak signal. If you're somewhere with one bar for hours, a bag or desk beats a pocket.
- Skip the shielding stickers. Independent testing has repeatedly found them ineffective — and anything that genuinely blocked the antenna would just make the phone transmit harder.
