If you're only going to test one room, test the bedroom. You spend roughly a third of your life there, in the same spot, night after night — so it's the one place where a measurement really represents your actual exposure. Here's the exact process we use, step by step, with the same documentation standards we apply to every record in our database.
What you'll need
- A meter that covers all three field types — magnetic (mG), electric (V/m), and RF (µW/m²). Consumer tri-field meters handle all three; if you have separate meters, that works too.
- A notebook or spreadsheet for readings. Numbers you don't write down are numbers you'll misremember.
- 15–30 minutes, ideally once during the day and once at night.
One habit to borrow from our methodology: record peak and average readings separately, and note the meter model, date, and exact position for every measurement. It's the difference between data and anecdotes.
Step 1 — Map the room before you measure
Sketch the room and mark what's on both sides of each wall. Magnetic fields pass through walls almost untouched, so what's behind the drywall matters as much as what's in the room:
- Is the electrical panel or a smart meter mounted on an exterior bedroom wall?
- Is there a refrigerator, HVAC unit, or home-theater setup on the other side of the headboard wall?
- Where are the Wi-Fi router and any mesh nodes relative to the bed?
- What's plugged in within six feet of the pillow — chargers, lamps, clocks, monitors, power strips?
Step 2 — Take a baseline at pillow height
With the room exactly as it is on a normal night, measure at the pillow — the position your head occupies for eight hours. Take all three measurements:
- Magnetic field (mG): hold the meter still for 30–60 seconds and record the steady reading and any peaks.
- Electric field (V/m): body position affects this one, so keep the meter away from your torso and take a couple of readings.
- RF (µW/m²): use peak-hold if your meter has it, and give it several minutes — Wi-Fi beacons and smart-meter bursts are easy to miss with a quick glance.
Repeat at the center of the bed and at any second sleeping position. Write everything down before moving on.
Step 3 — Walk the perimeter
Move slowly along each wall at roughly waist height, watching the magnetic reading. Spikes near a wall usually mean wiring, a panel, or an appliance on the far side. Note the location and the reading at the wall, then measure again at one foot, three feet, and six feet away — you'll almost always watch the number collapse with distance, and that drop-off tells you how far into the room the source actually reaches.
Step 4 — Isolate sources one at a time
This is the most informative step. Return to the pillow position, watch the meter, and change one thing at a time:
- Unplug the phone charger on the nightstand. Then the lamp. Then the clock.
- Put your phone in airplane mode, then take it out of the room entirely.
- Power off the Wi-Fi router (or just note the RF change when it's on the other side of the house).
- Turn off nearby electronics — TV, monitor, air purifier, fan.
Record the reading after each change. Most bedrooms turn out to have one or two dominant sources and a lot of irrelevant ones — this step tells you which is which, so any changes you make are aimed at something real.
Step 5 — Measure night conditions
Daytime readings can flatter a bedroom. At night, the household draws different loads, some smart meters and mesh networks chatter on their own schedules, and your phone — if it's on the nightstand — syncs, updates, and checks in while you sleep. Repeat the pillow-height measurements at bedtime with the room in its true nighttime state. If you use peak-hold on the RF meter, leave it running for ten minutes.
Reading your results
For comparison purposes, we band readings the same way across the whole database — these are comparison bands drawn from commonly referenced exposure guidelines, not medical thresholds:

Context matters more than any single number: a Moderate RF peak that happens for two seconds an hour is a different situation from a steady Moderate magnetic field across the whole bed. Duration and distance are always part of the story.
The most common findings — and the easy fixes
After enough bedroom tests, the same handful of findings come up again and again. None of them requires special products — just rearranging:
- Phone charger at the pillow. The cheapest fix in this article: charge across the room, or at least move the charger and phone a few feet from your head.
- Bed against a wall shared with a panel, meter, or appliance. Moving the bed to another wall — or even a couple of feet along the same wall — often drops the reading substantially.
- Router in the bedroom. Relocating it to a hallway or office usually costs nothing in coverage and removes the room's dominant RF source.
- Loaded power strip under the bed. Move it out from under the sleeping area and unplug what isn't used at night.
Re-measure after each change so you know what actually moved the number — that before-and-after pair is exactly the kind of record worth keeping.
